Among Us VR game Review

  • Among us VR knows what Innersloth’s murder mystery games were like when they came out in 2018. It placed 10 people in a spaceship and two Impostors attempt to kill everyone.
  • The VR remake of the original premise is fresh and exciting. Although it lacks some features, the experience is still great. It’s currently one of the best VR games this year.
  • It is hard to describe how polished Among Us VR feels while playing. Schell Games has successfully adapted it for virtual reality: The cel-shaded 3D art style works well, and switching to first person gameplay feels natural.

Among Us VR

  • It feels much more natural to walk around a replica of The Skeld spaceship map, using motion controls to perform tasks, and to fuel engines with a manual pump or priming shields by touching it is easier than using a mouse and keyboard.
  • The thumbsticks allow you to play while sitting or standing. Teleporting is not possible, however, you can use optional blinders to reduce nausea and snap turn for the camera.
  • The original template is faithfully reproduced in Among Us VR, which again divides us into Crewmates and Impostors. Crewmates are required to complete a series of tasks in The Skeld.
  • While some tasks can be boring, such as waiting for data transfers, the real fun comes from the social gameplay. There are still many new VR tasks. The Admin room now has a retinal scanner. This requires you to remain still for a while, but MedBay’s whack a mole mini-game is fun.

When the red flashing lights of a sabotage attempt appear, there’s more panic.

  • However, as an Impostor, your goal is to convince everyone that you are just another Crewmate. Even if you murder other crewmates and get away with it. There are many creative ways to commit murder.
  • You can also sabotage the ship, causing it to explode or depleting oxygen. Crewmates who leave them unfixed will be able to make quick cash.
  • Blackouts made me feel more scared, and a panic attack when the red lights flashed during a sabotage caused me to feel even more.
  • After a dead body is discovered, an emergency meeting takes place and detective work and trickery begin.
  • You, as a Crewmate, will have to identify the Imposters and determine who you can trust. You can be an Imposter by claiming your innocence, blaming others and trying to get other Crewmates to vote for you in order to purchase a one-way ticket for someone else to space.
  • It’s still great to be able to tell your story and pin the blame on others, even after many years of playing. VR only makes it more enjoyable.
  • Falsely being ejected can be frustrating. You must wait until you can strike again to prevent an imposter from getting away with it.
  • Like all social games, the success of a game like this depends on who you play with. VR gives you a greater sense that everyone is looking at you.

VR gives you a greater sense to be present when everyone is staring at your face.

  • This is true for the regular version of Among Us. However, having voice chat built into everyone’s headset solves one problem: if someone uses an external voice client such as Discord, dead people can still talk and cheat, but they are rendered mute after death.
  • Among Us VR makes emergency meetings a highlight, with everyone being able to communicate immediately.
  • The use of proximity increases tension. Knowing that someone’s voice becomes louder the closer you are to them is one way to gather evidence. This adds an extra dimension to matches, regardless of whether you are hunting or being hunted.
  • You can also ask someone to observe you being scanned in MedBay to verify your innocence, without alerting an Impostor.
  • You can hide in vents to listen to other crew members’ conversations if you are an Impostor.
  • Voice chat makes it easy to call someone out when they lie, and watching their “Crewmate”, crumble under pressure. If voice chat is not your thing, you can also use a text chat system to send predetermined messages.
  • Although there are many things that Among Us VR does well, the main problem with this version is the lack of all the content and features found in standard Among Us.
  • It’s understandable that some settings, such as a faster walking speed, can be changed. However, this could cause nausea for many people.
  • It would be great to be able adjust the number and complexity of tasks. Cosmetics are limited at launch. The Steve Zissou-esque beanie looks great, but it’s not a double-top hat.
  • Among Us VR’s inability to provide additional maps is even more frustrating. There was no Mira HQ, Polus or Airship at launch. All we had to do is play with The Skeld.
  • Although this was true when Among Us launched, many people don’t realize that it was the same because those maps were available before it became popular.
  • Consequently, the content here feels disappointingly smaller than what is currently available on Among Us. Also, you won’t find an anonymous voting system or expanded roles such as Scientists and Shapeshifters.
  • Schell Games claims that content updates will be coming soon, but we are not sure when or what. Among Us VR’s longevity is largely dependent on who you play with.
  • I was unable to play with my friends, but I still had a great time in a lobby filled with strangers.
  • Crossplay multiplayer is available between Quest 2 (PC) and Quest 2, which is a comforting option given VR’s small audience.

Verdict

  • Among Us VR is an amazing ground-up redesign of a classic social game. It feels right at home in virtual reality, staying true to Innersloth’s hit but with a fresh perspective and a few clever new tricks.
  • Among Us VR revives the action in The Skeld by adding new elements such as proximity voice chat and mini games that work with motion controls.
  • Although additional maps and cosmetics are not likely to be available quickly, if they meet the same standards as the current one, it will be worth the wait. This VR version of an existing game is undoubtedly one of the most impressive.
