Although the Nintendo Switch OLED is a better version than the original Nintendo Switch, it’s difficult to overlook the features that prevent it from being the Nintendo Switch Pro, the mythical next-gen machine Nintendo denies ever having in development.
Although there aren’t 4K graphics here or fast SSD loading times, the screen is larger and more vibrant. There are also a few quality-of-life improvements. If you are a casual user of the Switch, it’s worth the investment.
What’s the Nintendo Switch OLED?
The Nintendo Switch OLED, an upgraded version of its Nintendo Switch, will be slightly more expensive than its predecessors.
OLED screens are brighter and larger than previous Switch screens. The dock has been redesigned and now features an Ethernet port. There is also a larger kickstand at the back.
Joy-Con controllers remain the same as previous models, except that they are available in white, which represents a new color option. The Nintendo Switch OLED can play all of the same games that the older Switch models.
What is the Nintendo Switch OLED price?
The price of the Nintendo Switch OLED in the UK is PS309.99 GBP. The OLED is PS50 less expensive than the regular Switch (PS259.99), and PS110 more costly than the Switch Lite.
It is cheaper to buy any Nintendo Switch console than a PS5 (prices start from PS359) or an Xbox Series X(PS449). However, it is worth noting Microsoft’s disc-free Xbox Series S console is comparable in cost to the Switch of PS249.

The Nintendo Switch OLED makes some great design choices in terms of new stuff. The OLED screen, which measures 7 inches, looks fantastic and fills the space between Joy-Cons in an even more satisfying manner than LCD screens.
The Joy-Cons in white look great, giving the OLED an almost next-gen appearance. This colour scheme of white and black was perhaps a deliberate nod to the Xbox Series S design and Sony’s PlayStation 5. Although it would have been great to add some new features and redesign the controllers, that would not be a bad idea.
The kickstand that runs the length of the console now extends to the back and looks much better than the single leg on the original Switch. The new dock is cooler and more user-friendly than the original.
It’s also worth noting that the Nintendo Switch OLED still retains the amazing core design concept from the original Switch. This means you can use the console handheld, docked with your TV or in ‘tabletop” mode, which is still an excellent offering in terms versatility.
Nintendo Switch OLED features
The Nintendo Switch OLED features the same features as the predecessors. You can play the console handheld, docked, or tabletop. There is also a huge selection of games.
These new features are very welcome. The OLED screen is brighter than the LCD screens of the older Switch models. You also have the option to connect an Ethernet cable to your dock. This will improve your online connection speed and reliability, which will allow you to download faster and make your online gaming experience more enjoyable.
There are some missing features in the upgraded Switch model, however. The GPU and CPU haven’t been enhanced, so the processing power remains the same. The same games that ran on the old Switch will still run. While the online experience will be more enjoyable when the Switch is docked, the handheld mode will show a brighter picture. However, the gameplay experience will not change.
This feels like a missed chance from a visual perspective – even though the screen is larger and brighter, the Switch OLED’s resolution is still only 720p in handheld mode and 1080p when docked. 4K is not an option.
Because of their SSD storage, the latest consoles from Sony and Microsoft have faster loading times than ever. This SSD storage is not available on the Nintendo Switch OLED, so loading times will be as fast as with your old Switch.
Nintendo Switch OLED performance
While we could go on and on about all the shortcomings, the Nintendo Switch OLED is a great handheld gaming experience. The OLED screen is noticeably brighter than previous screens.
It is also noticeable that the screen is slightly larger than the original Switch screen, which measures 7 inches. The OLED screen is the best option if you prefer to use your Switch in handheld mode.
Upgrade to an OLED Switch is not like jumping to a new console generation. This shouldn’t surprise anyone who was paying attention to the specifications. This is similar to the feeling you get after you upgrade your TV. The new colours will amaze you, but you’ll still enjoy the same media as before.
Metroid Dread was the main focus of our week with the Nintendo Switch OLED. We tried it in tablet, handheld and docked modes. The game ran flawlessly in all three, and switching between them was as simple as ever. Although the Switch is still a fantastic concept, the OLED upgrades make the device even more impressive.

It was easy to boot up the Switch OLED in handheld mode for the first time. We followed the screen instructions, which made it simple to transfer our Nintendo account from the original Switch in a matter of minutes. It’s done via Wi-Fi and is very simple.
It’s easy to download games from Nintendo eShop. The system will recognize which titles you have and will also remember your saved games.
It was a bit more difficult to set up the OLED dock for Nintendo Switch. It is more difficult to open the back of the OLED dock than it was with the original Switch. The hinge allowed for easy access to the cables, but you have to remove the entire back. Although this is a minor modification, it made it much more difficult to open and close dock.
It’s easy to connect your cables once you are in there. Although it’s a shame you don’t get an Ethernet cable, we were able to find one. The Switch recognized the wired connection immediately and connected to it automatically. It made our downloads feel faster.
Our verdict on the Nintendo Switch OLED: Should You Buy It?
It is up to you to decide whether or not to use OLED. This is your decision. We recommend different products to different people depending upon their style of play.
We are confident that you will not regret purchasing a Nintendo Switch OLED if you are a regular user of the handheld mode on your Nintendo Switch. This is an expensive product but you’ll notice the difference in the screen. After seeing an OLED in action, it will be difficult to go back to a regular Switch.
It’s not hard to see why an OLED Switch would be a good choice if you use your Switch docked. If you are using the Switch on the move and taking advantage of the new screen, it isn’t much of an upgrade.
